Fall 2018 Stream Teams
We have five Stream Teams already registered with us this fall, and we have even more groups around Chattanooga interested in signing up!
So far, we have Red Bank Elementary School Stream Team looking into quarantining a section of Mountain Creek off from the Forest Kindergartners at their school. They want to measure the water quality of the creek before and after to determine the impact of the Forest Kindergartners. The Red Bank High School Stream Team is working to determine places they can do small-scale stabilization projects to minimize erosion of Mountain Creek’s streambanks.
The middle and high school Stream Teams at Ivy Academy have been collecting baseline data of the North Chickamauga Creek that runs directly beside their school. They are currently making observations of their creek and brainstorming which project they want to take on to improve their watershed. The Wauhatchie School Stream Team have been creating their own scientific tools to measure the turbidity of Lookout Creek and the ponds located on the Reflection Riding property. They spent two days making secchi discs and turbidity tubes, and then they spent two days collecting data at different locations to hone their skills.
The Bridge Stream Team came out to Reflection Riding to pair up with the Wauhatchie Stream Team to investigate the water together. It was a great experience for the Stream Teams to teach their skills and learn new ones with each other!
The Bridge Stream Team has also explored the South Chickamauga Creek at Audubon Acres and the North Chickamauga Creek at Greenway Farms. They have the unique experience to compare and contrast creeks all around the Chattanooga area.
We also have the Signal Mountain Bible Church homeschoolers and Silverdale Baptist Academy currently in the process of becoming Stream Teams as well! We are looking forward to having these members hop on board and see what they can do for their creeks!
