St. Lucia Watershed Protection

Ciceron Secondary School Watershed Project

The students in this project received a Biodiversity Award f rom the St. Lucia government in August, 2005! The students are working to reduce trash and erosion in their watershed and plan for more sustainable development. Their watershed also contains banana plantations, so they continue to learn about best practices in agriculture to minimize soil erosion and deterioration of the water quality by agricultural chemicals. They are monitoring the water quality in the stream closest to the school and have now planted trees at eroding areas to reduce soil loss. After spending many hours cleaning up trash along the stream banks and around the school, the students in initiated a Litter Patrol to help increase awareness throughout the school community about the problems of littering. While continuing their watershed work, they are adding renewable energy to their focus since the issue of Global Climate Change is prominent in the islands. The local electric utility, LUCELEC, is a proud sponsor of this program!
